Lost coffins of Borneon tribes

Empat Mata and Tunggal Mata controlled many people over which they held great powers. They had once commanded their men to make a human fort by standing upright in the river so that there will be nobody could pass by their territory except for those who were willing to pay tax for access. Other than that, the brothers also asked their people to do the harvesting without using any tools but just by picking each grain individually with their fingers. Those who failed to obey this command will lose one of their ear or even worse will be put to death.

Empat Mata in other perspective, he got super talent in art of carving. He had once carved a wood coffin for himself so that he can use it on the day when he dies. The coffin was such a masterpiece for its carve works on it. Until one day, his brother Tunggal Mata saw the coffin and showed his interest on it. He expressed his intention to have the coffin for himself but Empat Mata rejected. They started arguing each other. Tunggal Mata then remembered the pain that he had been suffering on how he was growing up as a victim being bullied by his brother and those grudges urged him to end Empat Mata's life. So he suggested his brother to test the coffin size whether it suits his body or otherwise the coffin will be his. Without any hesitation, Empat Mata went inside the coffin just to prove that he was right. Unfortunately soon after he lied himself inside it, Tunggal Mata asked his followers to tie the coffin with rattan. Realizing that he had been deceived by his brother, Empat Mata attempted to released himself but not to avail. His life ended due to suffocation. Soon after that, the coffin was sent to

After the death of Empat Mata, the leadership of Bukit Garam was fully taken over by Tunggal Mata. His administration had changed with less dictatorship and people were not afraid anymore. He didn't live longer due to sickness and died. It was believed that he was cursed for killing his own brother. Later, Tunggal Mata's death followed by his wife leaving their son and daughter, Sittetak and Darupak.

Sittetak was raised and taught well by Tunggal Mata with high hope that he will be his successor in the future and obviously Sittetak became a well known warrior meanwhile Darupak became the most adorable young lady. No one could get close to her because Sittetak would like to marry with his own sister. One day, Sittetak had to leave his village to lead a war mission against the Dusun tribe. At the same time, Bukit Garam was in a drought season and causing the people including Darupak to go Kinabatangan River for water supplies. Too bad for Darupak, she was attacked by a crocodile while she was bathing. The crocodile was different from the others for its capability to communicate with human. It was called Torongarek.

As Sittetak returned home, he found out about Darupak's death and later attacked Torongarek using his spear. Torongarek was heavily injured but managed to run away. With help of his own child, Torongarek was cured by human the lady shaman called Sabulig Buling. Torongarek then promised on behalf of all crocodiles in Kinabatangan River that they will never touch any Sabulig's descendants and relatives as an expression of gratitude for curing him.

After the death of his sister, Sittetak continued his role as the leader of the village but gradually lost his influence since the people were slowly moving out to other places such as Bat Supu, Batu Puteh, Sabangan and few more. Bukit Garam was no longer a safe place due to threats from outsiders and natural disasters.

Nowadays, there are more than 127 coffins have been found with carving on the surface. There is also source that claiming those coffins were owned by the Chinese during the period of Ming Dynasty (1369-1644) by referring to Ong Sum Ping (Huang Senping, the earliest Chinese to live in Borneo) but still cannot be verified as there are no relevant proofs that can be related with China's culture, tradition nor arts. These are because of the uses of buffalo's head in every coffins and also the patterns of the carving that have no similarity with any existing sources.
