Overview
If you have always longed to experience the fecundity of a real equatorial rainforest, Borneo will fulfil your wildest dreams. The island’s jungles conjure up remoteness and adventure, bringing to mind impenetrable foliage and river trips into the heart of the densest wildlife habitat. Significant part of Bornean rainforest remains intact, protected by conservation projects whose viability depends a part on income from travellers like us. For most of our travellers in the last 12 years of touring Borneo, their most memorable moments have been: Glimpsing a Wild orangutang swinging through the jungle canopy, Proboscis Monkey protecting his harem, locking eyes with Saltwater crocodile, watching a heard of Pygmy elephants crossing a river, Red Giant Squirrels gliding through the forest canopy, the Bats making an exodus out of a cave and many such encounters.

Itinerary
Our journey starts with Kota Kinabalu, the Capital of the state of Sabah in Eastern Malaysia. KK is a cultural melting pot. Here, Chinese meet Malays and Bruneis, Javanese, Filipinos, and even a couple of Europeans, all of whom have brought along their own cuisine. The night market is the best way to explore local food, and a couple of days' stay to visit places around and get to know the Malay Culture.
A 5-6 hour bus ride takes you to a place called Sandakan. On your journey, you can see Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in Sabah, Malaysia. You stay in chalets by the edge of the rainforest and visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center and the Sun Bear Sanctuary on the next day. Upon reaching, we check in and visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre for a guided night walk. The rainforest awakens to a different rhythm at night. The air is thick with the symphony of unseen creatures, from the chirping insects to the distant calls of nocturnal birds. A beam of light cuts through the darkness, illuminating a world of wonder. Tiny eyes reflect the light, revealing the presence of elusive creatures.
Today, we start with a Rainforest Discovery Center morning walk, a visit to the Orangutang Sanctuary, Nursery, and Sun Bear Sanctuary. Here we learn about how Orangutang and Sun Bears are cared for and rehabilitated into the wild. Explore the magnificent Rainforest from the stunning Canopy Walk at the Rainforest Discovery Center in Sepilok, one hike in the morning and one at night. This is where even seasoned travellers are expected to see some rare moments taken in the dark hours. Early morning, you may wake up to the calls of the Hornbill and several other birds.
The journey to the Kinabatangan forest itself is stunning. First via roads and then, the only access to the homestay is via a boat deep into the forest. Living 2 nights at a homestay at Kinabatangan River is as raw as it can get. The Kinabatangan River is the second-longest river in Malaysia, about 560 kms in length. You explore the place by staying with a local family, eat local fresh catch from the river, and get to learn their culture, the way they lead their life by the banks of the river inside the forest. Living with this family is as hospitable as it could get in this remote setting. Setting out on river safaris every day in a boat, you can have the best wildlife moments. Wild elephants, gibbons, orangutans, Pigmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, and many other bird species are often spotted along this river. Unwind in the evening just before heading out on a night boat ride to see the jungle activity in the dark hours. We learn about how deforestation due to Palm Oil plantations is causing the natural habitat of the animals to shrink. We also hike to Gomatong caves, which are where close to 2 million bats reside in the Sakau region.
The Gomantong Caves are an intricate cave system inside Gomantong Hill. The hill is the largest limestone outcrop in the Lower Kinabatangan area. Every evening people witness the bat exodus that happens when swarms of bats in millions move out of their caves for food. In a place as raw as this we believe that the experience matters more than the luxury. Especially when you wake up to calls from the gibbons and elephants right near the doorstep. But do not worry your safety will be taken care by the family and our group leaders. Stay at by the banks of Kinabatangan River will be basic, but rest assured the food, the experience and the family we stay with will blow your mind. The owner of the homestay has grown up in these rainforests and is very sound with his knowledge about the wildlife.
Well if the forests of Sabah make it diverse the marine life is equally diverse too. Our final leg takes us on a 6 hour bus ride to the sea side town of Semporna. We reach Semporna the town that makes gateway to the Tun Sakaran Marine Park, a group of 8 islands with dive sites on the Kapikan and Church reefs - Sibuan, Mantabuan, Mabul, Sipadan, Bohey Dulang, Mataking, Timba-Timba and Pandan these are some of the islands we travel to by speed boats. This is the sole reason why we do not recommend anyone below the age of 8 to experience diving and snorkelling around these islands.
The Islands around Semporna which are part of Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and Solomon Islands for the Coral Triangle. There are 600 species of Reef building corals alone. It nurtures 6 of the world's 7 marine turtle species. About a 120 Million people live on this triangle and rely on the reefs for food, income and protection from storms. One of these ethnic people are the Bajau Laut. From diving into deep waters to snorkelling by the best islands and sandbars. This place is a marine enthusiasts and photographers paradise. We spend 3 nights at Semporna heading out for activities all day like island hopping, snorkelling on these islands and those who want to dive there they could opt for a Discover dive the beginner level dive that even non-swimmers can do.
Before leaving the islands, we visit the Bajau Village. What sets the Bajau Laut apart is their deep connection to the sea. They have developed extraordinary diving skills, often spending hours underwater without the aid of modern diving equipment. Their ability to free-dive to great depths is a testament to their remarkable adaptation to their marine environment. Evenings are usually spent getting the rest needed for the breathing activity done during the day. On our last day, we arranged for an outdoor seaside BBQ and party for all our tour participants.
Head to Tawau airport in the morning for your flight to Kota Kinabalu, and we'll save the return time to KK by road. At KK, you are free to check in and relax at the hotel. There are a few options to explore on your own, like the Sabah State Museum, the malls to shop for any last-minute souvenirs, or enjoy the evening on your own at the waterfront. You must catch up for one last group dinner before you leave for Kuala Lumpur.
7:00 am Breakfast at the hotel. Depending upon your flights, you will spend your morning with a short walk in the neighbourhood or leave for the airport directly. But be sure to return to your hotel on time to prepare for your flights back home.
