Overview
Morocco is a fascinating fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, as evidenced in its architecture, food and landscapes. One of its most stunning jewels is the High Atlas Mountains – ancient, rustic and rich with folklore. Where is Morocco? Morocco, officially the Kingdom of Morocco, lies across the Strait of Gibraltarfrom Spain. It is the westernmost country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. It overlooks the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and has land borders with Algeria to the east, and the disputed territory of Western Sahara to the south. The next 10 days we will take a sojourn through souks to natural attractions in Morocco, camel treks into windswept desert and travel to the High Atlas Mountains, home to some of North Africa’s original residents: the Berber tribes. Several locations around Morocco have been filmed for movies like 'Gladiator' and the popular HBO series 'Game of Thrones' for its connection with the ancient world.

Today we dive into the History of Morocco as we stop to visit the ruins of the Roman outpost of Volubilis. The city was reclaimed by the local Amazigh tribes around 235 AD and it was near here in the 8th Century that Idriss I established the first dynasty of the Kingdom of Morocco. After a guided tour of Volubilis, we will stop for lunch at the sacred city of Moulay. After lunch, we’ll head to the lessor known imperial city of Meknes. Your visit will begin by entering the old medina through the interesting gate of Bab Mansour, which incorporates marble pillars that were moved from the Roman ruins of Volubilis. We will also visit the impressive Agdal reservoir and Heri es-Souani, a former granary and stable that lay alongside the reservoir and which once housed 12,000 horses. After exploring Meknes, you’ll make the short drive to Fes where you will stay for the night. Stay at a comfortable Modern/ Ethnic Hotel in Fes.
Fes, or Fez, the grandest royal city created by Morocco’s early Muslim rulers in the 9th century, is the country’s cultural capital and spiritual heart. From here, you will head to one of the Borj (towers) and get a panoramic view of the entire medina. Today we go hiking in the Atlas Mountains and see that places on Earth that seem like they couldn’t support human life and yet somehow people managed living there. Like the people indigenous to North Africa constrained by the Sahara Desert, they developed into one of the most unique cultures in human history as who had no choice but to develop ingenious methods of survival: the Berbers. We visit a nomadic family and learn how they live 6 months on a flat land and 6 months in the mountains and use face tattoos for fashion. Stay at a comfortable Modern/ Ethnic Hotel in Midelt.
